Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
EDMONTON, Alberta - The RedHawks appeared as though they were going to cruise to another Opening Day victory taking a 2-0 lead through the first three innings but saw it all fade away as the Edmonton Cracker-Cats posted a three-run fifth inning en route to a 4-2 victory over Fargo-Moorhead in front of 1,578 fans at TELUS Field in Edmonton, Alberta.
In the top of the first inning Joe Mathis led off with a single up the middle. He later advanced to second on a Richard Austin ground out and reached third on a Reggie Rivard balk before crossing the plate thanks to a Ruben Salazar single.
Fargo-Moorhead (0-1) tacked on another run in the third inning. Mathis led off in the inning a doubled down the left field line and would score just two batters later when Austin hit an RBI ground out to the second baseman.
Down 2-0, Edmonton came out in the fifth inning and posted three runs to take a lead it would never lose. In the inning the Cracker-Cats collected three hits, including back-to-back doubles.
Brandon Culp got the start for the RedHawks after going 14-0 with a 2.60 ERA for the team a year ago. Culp (0-1, 5.40) started out strong, striking out the side in the first frame. Although Culp took the loss for Fargo-Moorhead, he collected four strikeouts and picked up his 400th career strikeout (402).
For Edmonton (1-0), Rivard picked up his first win of the season while J.P. Fauske earned the save.
Fargo-Moorhead and Edmonton will face off again on Friday at TELUS Field with the first pitch slated for 8:05 CST. Josh Stevens will take to the mound for the RedHawks while the Cracker-Cats will counter with Brett Lawson.
