New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, Jan. 10, 2010 - The Albuquerque Thunderbirds had just seven healthy bodies for the second game in as many days, but the team notched its fifth consecutive win with an overtime victory over the Utah Flash, 95-93, on Sunday afternoon. Antoine Agudio led the way for Albuquerque with 25 points. He also paced the team with nine rebounds and seven assists.
Albuquerque opened the game sluggishly, and trailed 25-15 at the end of the first quarter. The team closed the gap in the second quarter, and trailed 52-47 at the half.
Kevin Pittsnogle came out gunning in the third quarter, scoring 15 points in the first 5 minutes as Albuquerque used a 17-2 run to take an eight point advantage. Kurt Looby energized the T-Birds defense with three rejections during the third quarter run.
Albuquerque led 80-73 with 4:30 to play in the game, but Utah used a 5-0 run to close the gap to 80-78. Chad Toppert's three with 1:11 on the clock put the team up five, but Dontell Jefferson responded with a quick three of his own to cut the lead to two once again.
The teams traded free throws on the next two possessions, and Albuquerque held an 85-83 advantage with 30.9 seconds on the clock. Utah intercepted the inbounds pass on the next T-Birds possession and scored on a fast break layup to tie the game at 85. Albuquerque failed to get off a shot on the final possession, and the game was headed for overtime.
The Flash scored the first four points in overtime, but Albuquerque responded with five straight and held a one point lead with just under three minutes remaining.
The T-Birds trailed 93-92 with 34 seconds on the clock, but Pittsnogle connected on a turnaround 15 footer to put Albuquerque up by one with just under 14 seconds to play. Utah failed to score on its next possession, and Albuquerque led by two after a free throw from Yaroslav Korolev. On the final play of the game, the Flash went to Jefferson once again, but his shot from the top of the key rimmed out as time expired.
Pittsnogle scored 21 points for Albuquerque, all in the second half and overtime. Carlos Powell (13), Toppert (12) and Korolev (12) also scored in double figures for the T-Birds.
Jefferson and Ingram led the way for Utah with 16 points apiece.
