Owen Sound Attack News Release

It was the Ethan Szypula show on Friday, Feb. 26 when the Owen Sound Attack travelled to Mississauga to take on the Steelheads.

The 3rd year forward was dominant for Owen Sound, scoring four times and adding an assist to help lead the Attack to an 10-2 win over Mississauga on Friday night.

Szypula, who contributed five points in the win, was one of four Owen Sound players to record multiple points on the evening, in a game that was never in doubt.

That's because when the puck dropped, the Attack couldn't have dreamt up a better start to the action.

Owen Sound would score early and often in the game's opening 20 minutes, and Ethan Szypula would kick off a five goal first period for the visitors just 1:51 into the game.

Szypula's 15th of the year would come on the backs of a hard forecheck by Jaden Lindo and kevin Hancock, and result in the 3rd year forward blasting a snapshot over the outstretched glove of former Attack goalkeeper Jack Flinn.

Jonah Gadjovich would then use a backhander to make that a 2-0 lead for the visiting squad while on a Baywest Nissan Powerplay at the 4:30 mark of the frame. Captain Santino Centorame and rookie forward Nick Suzuki would pick up the helpers on the play, which gave way to another quick strike.

Just over two minutes after Gadjovich's 13th of the year, Szypula would take a pass up the middle of the ice and split the Mississauga defence before firing his 2nd goal of the evening through the five hole of Flinn, chasing him from the net. Thomas Schemitsch and Petrus Palmu would pick up assists on the goal, which came just 7:15 into the contest.

And despite the change of goaltenders for the Steelheads, the Attack offence continued to click.

Justin Brack would make it 4-0 with 6:42 left in the first period by finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Jaden Lindo before Sean Durzi would join the goal party with his 5th of the year, a onetimer just 58 seconds removed from Brack's goal.

Ethan Szypula would continue his tear in the first, also assist on Brack's goal, while Liam Dunda and Thomas Schemitsch picked up the helpers on Durzi's tally.

The Steelheads would put a bit of a sour taste in Owen Sound's mouth before the first period expired though.

Mason Marchment would finally get the home side on the board, blasting home a one-timer with 24 seconds left on the clock to make it a 5-1 Attack lead going into the 2nd period.

And while the Steelheads would score late in the 1st, Owen Sound wouldn't be rattled when the puck dropped to begin the middle stanza.

A pretty passing play by Petrus Palmu and Markus Phillips would allow Ethan Szypula to get loose in the high slot, and Szypula would make no mistake when faced with a shot for his first career OHL hattrick. The goal, Szypula's 17th of the season, would come just 2:38 into the 2nd and make it 6-1 to restore Owen Sound's five goal lead.

The Attack would eventually convert the touchdown, scoring their 7th of the evening with 4:55 left to play in the 2nd period. Kevin Hancock would make it 7-1 on a quick release snapshot for his 8th of the year on assists from Palmu and Schemitsch, who briefly joined Szypula at three points on the evening.

That's because Szypula's scoring wasn't finished at a hattrick.

With 1:41 left to play in the 2nd period, Szypula would take an outlet pass from netminder Michael McNiven before ripping his 4th of the game into the back of the twine to give Owen Sound an 8-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

The game's final 20 minutes of play would be more favourable to Mississauga than the previous two periods, but it would be largely aesthetic.

Nic Hague would pocket the Steelheads' 2nd of the evening on another one-timer, this coming while the Attack were two men short on a Paul Davis Systems Penalty Kill at 5:50 of the 3rd.

Owen Sound would answer back though, with Justin Brack making it a 9-2 game just over the halfway mark of the final period. Brack's 2nd of the evening, a rebound marker, would come on assists from Jaden Lindo and Josh Sterk.

The Attack would find the back of the net once more on the evening, with former Steelheads' captain Bryson Cianfrone completing the scoring with a one-timer late in the 3rd period to solidify the 10-2 win for Owen Sound.

Ethan Szypula's big night earned him Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game while Petrus Palmu and Thomas Schemitsch were named 2nd and 3rd stars respectively.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 39-15 in favour the Attack as Michael McNiven picked up his 18th win of the year in net.

Owen Sound is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 27 when they host the Sarnia Sting in a 7:30pm clash.

Tickets for that game are available at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office or by calling 519-371-7452.
