North Bay Battalion News Release
ERIE, Pa. - Dylan Strome scored one goal and added two assists and goaltender Devin Williams made 19 saves for the shutout as the Erie Otters defeated the North Bay Battalion 4-0 in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night.
Alex DeBrincat contributed one goal and one assist, while Jake Marchment and Kyle Maksimovich each scored a goal for Erie, which moved its won-lost-extended record to 45-11-1 for 91 points atop the Midwest Division, Western Conference and league.
Williams, who leads the OHL with both 36 wins and a 2.22 goals-against average, recorded his second shutout of the season as the Otters earned a split of the season series before 4,923 at the Erie Insurance Arena.
Goaltender Jake Kment faced 33 shots for North Bay, 30-19-9 for 69 points, second in the Central Division and third in the Eastern Conference. The Battalion, which opened a two-game road trip, was shut out for the third time this season, all on the road, and for the first time since a 7-0 loss Nov. 20 to the Mississauga Steelheads.
Battalion captain Mike Amadio saw the end of a 12-game points streak during which he had 15 goals and nine assists for 24 points. He last was held without a point in a 2-1 loss via shootout to the visiting Kingston Frontenacs on Jan. 24.
Erie, which carried a 1-0 lead into the second period, scored two goals 3:13 apart late in the frame to gain separation on the Troops.
Marchment struck on the power play at 14:55, eight seconds after Zach Shankar went off for tripping. Marchment got loose on the left side to take a cross-zone pass and one-time the puck past Kment.
Erie applied enough pressure that, after an icing, Battalion coach Stan Butler called time out at 17:45, but the Otters kept coming. Amadio failed to clear the zone, and Maksimovich cut to the net from the right wing to score at 18:08 on assists by Strome and Taylor Raddysh.
Strome collected his 31st goal of the season at 14:11 of the third period, skating down the right wing past Cam Dineen and veering to the net to beat Kment with a wrister.
DeBrincat scored what proved to be the winner just 1:29 into the game when he took a short pass off the end boards from Raddysh and converted from the right side. Travis Dermott also assisted on DeBrincat's team-leading 43rd goal.
Amadio intercepted a pass in the high slot in the 15th minute but fired wide on an open chance, and Kment denied DeBrincat from directly in front in the 16th.
The Troops failed to score on the only three power plays of the period.
The Battalion visits the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Saturday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on CogecoTV Channel 12 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.
