 Indianapolis Indians News Release
The SkyChiefs Belt Six HR And Collect 37 Total Bases In The Win
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Center fielder Justin Singleton and first baseman Kevin Barker clobbered two home runs apiece, while left fielder John-Ford Griffin and catcher Guillermo Quiroz also went deep as Syracuse rolled to a 16-3 victory over Indianapolis Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium.
The six roundtrippers and 16 runs, along with 37 total bases, were the most by a Tribe opponent this season.
The SkyChiefs, who have won five of their last eight games, improve to 53-53 with the victory. The Indians, who have dropped eight of their last nine contests, fall to 59-47 on the campaign.
Singleton finished the contest 3-for-4 with two dingers and seven RBI, while Barker wrapped up the evening 3-for-4 with four scores, one double, two long balls and three RBI. Griffin added a 3-for-4 effort with two runs, one double, one homer and two RBI, while Quiroz contributed a 2-for-5 performance with two scores, one roundtripper and a pair of RBI.
Barker's four runs tie Pawtucket's George Lombard (May 20) for the most runs scored by an Indians opponent this season, while Singleton's seven RBI tie Norfolk's Brian Daubach (April 15) for the most runs driven in by a Tribe foe in 2005.
RF Gabe Gross and SS Julius Matos added two base knocks apiece as six SkyChiefs notched multi-hit games.
Syracuse got the ball rolling with two runs in the first and four more in the third. In the first, 3B Bryant Nelson roped a single to left center before Barker smashed a two-run homer to right field. The third was highlighted by Barker's second dinger of the night and 15th of the campaign -- a solo shot to right -- and Singleton's three-run bomb to right.
Indianapolis got on the board -- in the fourth -- when SS Alfredo Amezaga drilled a two-run double to plate LF Cesar Crespo and RF Yurendell de Caster, but the SkyChiefs responded with 10 of the game's next 11 runs to close out the scoring.
Amezaga registered a 3-for-3 night, while CF Nate McLouth, 3B Bobby Hill and catcher Ronny Paulino collected two hits apiece for the Indians. Crespo went 0-for-3, but scored two runs for Indianapolis.
Tribe LHP Cory Stewart (3.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 6-9. SkyChiefs LHP Zach Jackson (5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO), who was making his Triple-A debut, earned the win.
The two teams return to Alliance Bank Stadium Friday night at 6 p.m., for the four-game series finale. RHP Bryan Bullington is scheduled to take the hill for Indianapolis, while RHP Chad Gaudin is expected to get the nod for Syracuse. The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Robert Portnoy have the call. Friday's pre-game show begins at 5:40 p.m.
PIRATES AND PADRES SWING TRADE
Prior to Thursday night's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced a trade which sends Indians catcher David Ross to the San Diego Padres organization for Minor League infielder J.J. Furmaniak.
Furmaniak, who turns 26 on Sunday, hit .266 (103-for-387) with 16 doubles, four triples, 14 home runs and 47 RBI in 99 games for Triple-A Portland (Ore.).
Ross, a 28-year-old who was acquired from Los Angeles on March 30, began the season with the Pirates and hit .222 (24-for-108) with eight doubles, three home runs and 25 RBI in 40 games. He was optioned to the Tribe on July 9 and batted .211 (4-for-19) with one RBI in six games for Indianapolis.
Furmaniak is expected to join the Indians this weekend.
