IL1 Norfolk Tides

Scobie, Tides top Mud Hens, 4-0

July 28, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Jason Scobie allowed just four hits in 6.2 shutout innings of work, picking up his league-leading 13th win of the year as the Tides knocked off the Toledo Mud Hens 4-0 Thursday afternoon.

Scobie (13-4) moved past Indianapolis' Zach Duke to take sole possesion of the IL lead in wins. He scattered just three singles and a double in 6.2 innings, striking out four and walking one. Scobie is now just two wins shy of tying the Tides single-season record of 15 wins, accomplished by Mike Fyhrie in 1996 and Jim Bibby in 1971.

The Tides scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the third inning. Chris Basak singled to right center field to lead off the inning, and Angel Pagan followed with a ground ball that Toledo second baseman Ryan Raburn couldn't handle to put runners on first and second. Eric Valent followed with a line drive double down the right field line off of Toledo starter Andrew Good (5-4), plating both Basak and Pagan. Victor Diaz followed with an RBI double to right, scoring Valent and putting the Tides up 3-0.

With the double, Valent increased his season-high hitting streak to 13 games. Over that stretch, he is hitting .426 (20-for-47) with a home run and eight RBI.

The Tides increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Chris Basak.

The Tides, who have won 10 of their last 11 contests over Toledo, take on the Mud Hens again on Friday night in the finale of their four-game series. Brian Bannister (1-1, 3.55) takes the hill for the Tides against Toledo right-hander Joel Zumaya (0-2, 7.71). First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
