TODAY'S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons host the Pawtucket Red Sox in game three of their five-game set from Dunn Tire Park (1:05 p.m.). Last night, the Bisons earned their first victory of the series with a 5-2 win. Steve Watkins held the PawSox to 0-9 with runners in scoring position while Andy Abad drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. Now with a chance to even up the series at two games apiece, the Bisons will turn to RHP Jeremy Guthrie. The team-leader with nine wins, Guthrie will be looking to bounce back from a complete-game defeat to the Red Barons last Saturday. He will be up against LHP Abe Alvarez. Alvarez has won two straight, including a 6.1 inning performance Saturday against Ottawa (5H, 1R).
SITTING ON 70: Andy Abad became the fourth hitter in the International League to reach 70RBI on the season. Last night, Abad doubled home a run in the 4th inning before driving in two more with another two-bagger in the 8th inning. He is now six RBI behind Columbus' Mitch Jones for the league lead and two behind Ernie Young for tops on the Bisons.
LEFTY RELIEF: Reliever Chris Cooper has been solid for the Bisons since joining the team on July 18. In four appearances, the lefty has allowed just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings. Last night, he retired seven of the eight batters he faced.
ANOTHER CLUTCH HIT: Outfielder Jason Cooper came up with another big hit for the Herd last night. It was his two-out RBI-single in the 4th inning that proved to be the game-winning hit. Cooper, who also belted a Grand Slam Monday night to help the Bisons comeback and defeat the Red Barons, 8-7, has 30RBI with just 32 hits on the season.
HOT HOMESTAND: Ryan Garko has already enjoyed the longest homestand of the season. In the last five games, Garko is hitting .500 (9-18) with a double, two home runs, five RBI and four runs scored. The stretch has raised his average to .294 for the season, the highest it has been since May 15 (.298).
ROSTER MOVE: RHP Fernando Cabrera joins the Bisons today. The reliever was optioned down from Cleveland after going 0-0 with a 1.93ERA in five games with the Tribe (9.1IP, 10H, 2R, 2ER, 6BB, 9K). Prior to joining the Indians on July 5, Cabrera was absolutely dominating for the Herd. He was 6-0 with a 0.99ERA and three saves in 27 appearances with the Bisons, earning a selection to the 2005 IL All-Star Team.
