Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Syracuse scored all eight of its runs over the first three innings en route to an 8-5 victory over Indianapolis Thursday night at Victory Field. The SkyChiefs improve to 49-50 with the win. The Indians, who see their seven-game home winning streak come to an end, fall to 58-39 on the season.

Syracuse jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. CF Gabe Gross and 1B Kevin Barker walked before LF John-Ford Griffin blasted a 383-foot home run to right field -- his third roundtripper of the series and 22nd of the season.

The SkyChiefs put up two more runs in the second when Barker roped a two-out, two-run single to plate 2B Danny Solano and SS Julius Matos.

Indianapolis cracked the scoreboard with two scores in the second and two more in the third. Catcher Ronny Paulino blasted his 10th Triple-A homer -- a 394-foot, two-run bomb down the left-field line -- in the second. CF Cesar Crespo and SS Alfredo Amezaga started the third with back-to-back singles before 3B Ty Wigginton plated Crespo with a base knock to right field. Amezaga then came plateward on RF Graham Koonce's RBI groundout.

Syracuse added three insurance runs in the top of the third when DH Chad Mottola cracked his 14th dinger of the campaign -- a solo shot to right field -- and Matos launched his fifth long ball of the season -- a two-run shot to left field.

The Indians managed their final run in the fifth when 1B Brad Eldred belted an RBI double to left center in his final at-bat before being recalled by the Pirates.

SkyChiefs RHP Shaun Marcum (6.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO) picked up the win, improving to 4-1.

Tribe LHP Mike Connolly (4.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 0-2.

The Indianapolis bullpen -- RHP Brian Mallette (2.2 IP, 1 BB, 3 SO) and RHP Jeff Miller (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) -- continued its recent dominance, combining to give up just one hit over 4.2 scoreless innings.

Matos led the way for Syracuse, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Indianapolis continues its nine-game homestand Friday night when Columbus visits Victory Field for a 5 p.m. doubleheader. Both contests will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Robert Portnoy have the call. Friday's pre-game show begins at 4:40 p.m. A fireworks spectacular will follow the twinbill.
