TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game home and home series and the 10th of 16 meetings. The fifth of eight meetings at Harbor Park. The Braves are 2-7 vs. the Tides, 1-3 at Harbor Park. Game three of a five game road trip (Braves are 2-0). The Braves were 4-7 in Norfolk vs. the Tides last season. Richmond is 11-14 vs. the South Division, 6-6 on the road. The Braves are looking for their sixth straight win for the first time this season. The Braves are enjoying their first five game winning streak of the season. The Braves last won six in a row from May 20-25, 2003. Richmond is fourth in the South, one game behind third place Charlotte and 19 back of the first place Tides. Richmond is 348-395 all-time vs. Norfolk. The Tides have beaten the Braves six straight times.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves beat the Durham Bulls 8-4 Thursday at Durham Athletic Park. The Braves banged out 14 hits to earn their fifth straight win and sweep a series for the first time this season. The Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI ground ball by James Jurries. The Bulls tied the game in the second inning on a home run by Jeff Deardorff. Andy Marte drilled a homer in the fourth to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. B.J. Upton singled two runs home in the bottom half to put the Bulls in front 3-2. The Braves broke the game open with a five run fifth inning. Scott Thorman tied the game with an RBI single. Jonathan Schuerholz drove in a run with a ground out to put the Braves ahead to stay. John Barnes knocked in two runs with a double. Jason Bourgeois finished the rally with an RBI single. Thorman knocked in another run in the eighth to make it 8-4. Matt Childers earned the win in relief, pitching three innings without allowing an earned run. John Webb took the loss. Kerry Robinson had three hits for the Braves. Upton had two hits for the Bulls.
ROSTER MOVES: LHP Macay McBride has been promoted to Atlanta. He will be making his major league debut. RHP Roman Colon joins the R-Braves from Atlanta. The Braves roster now stands at 24 (12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders, and three outfielders). Four players are on the DL. Ten Braves have earned big league call-ups this season and three are currently with Atlanta (McBride, Kelly Johnson, and John Foster). The other seven big league call-ups were Kyle Davies, Colon, Andy Marte, Frank Brooks, Matt Childers, Seth Greisinger, and Brayan Pena. The Braves have made 92 roster moves this season and lost 250 man-games to the disabled list. Five of the Braves promoted to Atlanta had no previous major league experience (McBride, Davies, Johnson, Marte, and Pena). The Braves have used a total of 46 players this season.
THE NUMBER CRUNCH: The Braves are 6-2 since the All Star Break. Richmond has scored 50 runs in their last eight games. Esix Snead leads the IL in stolen bases. Snead has reached base in 16 straight games. Recent R-Braves acquisition Kerry Robinson still leads the PCL in steals with 26. Scott Pratt is 13 for his last 26 (.500) and has a six game hitting streak. Brayan Pena has hits in seven straight games (11-26 .423). Frank Brooks has appeared in six straight games without allowing a run. Andy Marte is 7 for his last 18 (.389). Tony Pena's four game run scoring streak ended last night. J.C. Boscan has scored runs in three straight games and has reached base in four straight. John Barnes snapped a 1 for 17 slide with two hits last night. The Braves last four game sweep was July 8-11, 2004 vs. Pawtucket. The Braves and Tides have played three straight one-run games. Five of the nine games between these clubs have been decided by one run.
