July 22, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-hander Sam Marsonek allowed just one unearned run over five innings in game one, while catcher Wil Nieves and second baseman Felix Escalona both went 3-for-4 with two runs in the nightcap as Columbus rolled to a doubleheader sweep -- 3-2 and 10-3 -- of Indianapolis, in front of 10,930 Friday night at Victory Field.

The Clippers, who improve to 56-45, pull to within two and a half games of Indianapolis in the race for an International League playoff berth. The Indians, who fall to 58-42 on the campaign, have now dropped three straight home games after registering seven straight W's at the friendly confines.

Marsonek (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) took a no-decision in the first game, but kept Columbus close in the completion of a suspended game from April 29.

Columbus got on the board in the top of the fourth when RF Michael Vento belted his 12th homer of the season -- a solo shot to left field. The Clippers added a run in the sixth when CF Kevin Reese walked, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error and came plateward on 3B Russ Johnson's double down the left-field line.

Indianapolis cracked the run column in the bottom of the sixth when 2B Cesar Crespo walked, moved to second on LF Ray Sadler's single to center field, advanced to third on a deep fly and scored on a passed ball. The Indians knotted things with a run in the sixth when 3B Ty Wigginton singled to left field, trotted to third on RF Yurendell de Caster's double down the left-field line and came home on catcher Ronny Paulino's RBI groundout.

The Clippers pushed across the winning run in the top of the ninth when LF Kevin Thompson scored 1B Mitch Jones with an RBI single to right field.

In the nightcap, Columbus broke open a nip-n-tuck affair with seven runs in the top of the sixth. The Clippers sent 10 men to the plate in an inning that saw eight consecutive hitters reach base. The seven runs equaled the most allowed by Indianapolis in a single frame this season. The inning was highlighted by Reese's two-run triple to right center after the Tribe made one mental mistake and committed another costly error with the bases loaded.

Columbus received all the support it needed from the bottom of the order as its 7-8-9 hitters combined to go 7-for-12 with five runs and three RBI in game two.

Clippers RHP Kris Wilson (2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) improved to 4-1 with the game-one victory, while RHP Eric Schmitt (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) improved to 3-1 with the game-two win.

Indians LHP Cory Stewart (9.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) fell to 6-8 with the loss in game one, while RHP Kirk Bullinger (0.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) dropped to 2-3 with the loss in game two.

The two teams return to Victory Field Saturday night at 7 p.m., for game three of the five-game set. The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Greg Rakestraw have the call. Saturday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
