Tides win 6-1 over Richmond

July 22, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Tides took advantage of three sixth inning errors by the Richmond Braves and cruised to a 6-1 win in front of 9,187 fans at Harbor Park Friday night.

With the Tides leading 2-1 entering the sixth, Richmond reliever Jeramy Ward quickly retired the first two batters he faced, but Norfolk would rally thanks to some shaky fielding by the Braves. Rodney Nye singled up the middle to start the rally, then stole second base on a nicely executed delayed steal. After Chase Lambin was intentionally walked, both Nye and Lambin moved up one base on a wild pitch. Tides pitcher Jason Scobie then grounded a hot shot that Richmond shorstop Tony Pena could not field cleanly, allowing Nye to score and give the Tides a 3-1 lead.

The inning was not done, however, as another wild pitch by Ward allowed Lambin to score and advanced Scobie to second base. Anderson Hernandez then grounded a ball to Ward, but the pitcher threw the ball wildly to first, allowing Hernandez to reach safely and Scobie to advance to third. Hernandez proceeded to steal second base to put runners on second and third, and Eric Valent followed with a high pop up to short that Pena could not handle, allowing both runners to score and give the Tides a 6-1 lead.

Scobie (12-4) was very solid in earning the win for the Tides. He allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work, striking out four and walking three. With the win, he moved into a tie with Indianapolis' Zach Duke for the International League lead with 12 wins.

With the win, the Tides (55-46) won their seventh straight game over the Braves, and improved their lead in the IL South Division to a season-high 11.5 games over the Durham Bulls.

Norfolk continues their homestand with a 7:15 pm contest vs. the Braves on Saturday night at Harbor Park. Brian Bannister (1-0, 1.59) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against Richmond right-hander Adam Bernero (1-0, 0.00).
