Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY- The Syracuse Crunch defeated the division-leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-3 in a shootout at the Mohegan Sun Arena tonight.
The win improves the Crunch's overall record to 7-3-1-0 and evens the season series against the Penguins with a 1-1-0-0 record. Crunch netminder Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 23 of 26 shots and the Crunch penalty kill unit denied all five Penguin power-play attempts.
Danick Gauthier opened the scoring with his first goal of the season 4:44 into the opening frame. Gauthier forced a turnover and beat Penguins defender Philip Samuelsson to score on a partial breakaway against netminder Jeff Deslauriers.
The Penguins responded 12:39 into the period when Harry Zolnierzyk collected his own rebound and beat Gudlevskis to tie the game.
The Crunch power-play unit converted on an unsportsmanlike penalty given to Bobby Farnham immediately following the Penguins goal. Nesterov one-timed a pass at the bottom of the left wing circle for a Crunch lead 14:31 in the first period. Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov each extended their point streaks to eight and 10 games respectively, by picking up assists on the play.
The Penguins scored the only goal of the middle frame at the 13:56 mark to even the score at 2-2. Andrew Ebbett wrapped around the right post and snuck the puck past Gudlevskis on the left side. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Scott Harrington assisted on the play.
Ebbett scored a go-ahead goal 12:47 into the final frame. With Gudlevskis out of the crease challenging the puck Ebbett was able to score, sliding the puck past Gudlevskis.
The Crunch retaliated with Evan Rankin's fourth goal of the season. Rankin potted the rebound of a JP Cote shot to tie the game with 4:22 to play in regulation. Gauthier earned his second point of the night with the secondary assist.
The Penguins had a chance to end the game when they were awarded a penalty shot just 37 seconds into overtime but Zolnierczyk couldn't convert. Neither team would score in the extra frame sending the game to a shootout.
Tanner Richard and Kucherov scored for the Crunch while Gudlevskis stopped all four Penguin attempts to secure his third victory of the season.
