Abbotsford Heat News Release
Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat defeated the San Antonio Rampage (AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers) 2-1 on Tuesday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC). The Heat are now 8-4-0-1 on the season and currently sit first in the AHL Western Conference.
Heat goaltender Joni Ortio continued his strong play of late, earning his fourth straight win and first star honours. Both Heat goals were scored on the power play, marking the sixth consecutive game the Heat have scored on the man advantage.
Markus Granlund opened the scoring for the Heat on the power play at 19:31 of the first period. Granlund's third goal of the year was assisted by Corban Knight and Mark Cundari. The first period ended 1-0 for Abbotsford, and was a penalty filled 20 minutes with seven minor penalties assessed between the two teams.
The Rampage came back to tie the game on a goal from John Lee at 14:02 of the second period. Despite another five combined minor penalties, the teams were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. Through two periods, Abbotsford outshot San Antonio 19-17.
Blair Jones scored the game winner at 13:28 of the third period, the second Heat power play goal of the night. The goal was assisted by Tyler Wotherspoon and Roman Horak.
Joni Ortio made 23 saves on 24 shots for the Heat, while Michael Houser stopped 23 of 25 shots for San Antonio.
Abbotsford finished two for nine on the man advantage, and killed off all seven San Antonio power plays.
This weekend the Heat will host the Toronto Marlies (AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will feature the second Legends of Hockey game of the season, with NHL Hall of Famer Mike Bossy appearing for autographs prior to the game on the AESC concourse at 5:30pm. Sunday will be the first family day of the season, with a family skate on the AESC ice after the game.
