Sweet Strikes out Career-High 10 Batters in 4-1 Win

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Devin Sweet tossed a career-high seven innings and struck out ten en route to a 4-1 West Virginia win over the Lexington Legends Saturday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Sweet (4-4) set the tone early by striking out the Legends (5-12, 42-44) looking in order in an impressive first inning. The matchup quickly turned into a pitcher's duel, as Charlie Neuweiler (3-9) battled pitch-for-pitch with Sweet and kept the game scoreless into the third.
In the top of the third, the Power (9-8, 46-41) tallied their first run of the ballgame on a Julio Rodriguez RBI double off the wall in center to take a 1-0 lead. Sweet carried his momentum from the first two frames and worked a three-up, three-down inning in the third and fourth while upping his strikeout tally to six through four.
West Virginia added some run support for Sweet in the sixth inning with two runs on just one hit. Onil Pena scored on a bases loaded walk issued to Mike Salvatore and Joseph Rosa came in to score when Rodriguez was plunked by a pitch just one batter later.
With a 3-0 lead in the seventh and Jake Anchia on second base, Rosa cracked his third base hit of the day off the right-field wall that plated another Power run to make it 4-0. Lexington finally broke through against Sweet with their first run of the ballgame in the home half on an RBI double by Reed Rohlman. However, Sweet limited the damage by retiring the next two Legends on strikes and set a new career-high with ten strikeouts in the game.
Dayeison Arias (S, 6) entered in the eighth inning and dominated, hurling two scoreless innings of work to shut the door on the 4-1 win with his sixth save of the year.
West Virginia concludes its four-game series against the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. LHP Steven Moyers (7-4, 3.69 ERA) heads to the hill for the Power, while the Legends go with RHP Yohanse Morel (1-2, 7.06 ERA).
