Evansville Otters News Release
Evansville, IN - The Otters overcame a four deficit only to lose 6-5 to the Southern Illinois Miners Friday at Rent One Park.
The Otters played most of the game without manager Wayne Krenchicki, who was ejected in the bottom of the second inning for arguing with home plate umpire Brian Ferguson.
The Otters scored their first run of the game in the fifth inning when Eric Blackwell singled in Dustin Koca from second base, closing the gap to 4-1. The Otters added another run in the seventh when Blackwell scored on a wild pitch.
After Joey Metropoulos' second home run of the night extended the Miners' lead to 5-2, Evansville would complete the comeback in the eighth inning. Koca doubled in Greg Alexander before coming around to score on a Blackwell groundout. Frank Meade scored the game tying run on a wild pitch.
The tie would be short-lived though, as Otters closer Justin Smith came on to pitch the bottom of the eighth. After being hit by a pitch, leadoff batter Chris Crescenzi advanced to second base on a Travon Jackson sacrifice bunt. Manager Mike Pinto then called on Andrew Sweet to pinch hit. Sweet delivered, lacing a ball over first baseman Tyler Diamond's head, scoring pinch runner Mike Higa.
The Otters went down in order in the ninth, falling to 11-29 on the year. Justin Smith fell to 0-2, while Miners' reliever Chris Wiman advanced to 3-1.
The Otters will celebrate the Fourth of July with a 7:05pm tilt with Miners Saturday.
