Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers saw their three game winning streak come to a close on the Fourth of July as the Florence Freedom were victorious by the final of 9-1.
Florence right-hander Everett Saul was superb on the mound for the Freedom as he pitched four and two-thirds hitless innings and ended up holding the Crushers to just a run on two hits in seven innings of work. He struck out seven and walked two. "Saul pitched well for them tonight," said Crusher manager John Massarelli. "He threw a lot of off speed pitches that kept our guys off balance." Right-hander John Tessyman pitched two scoreless innings in his debut with the Freedom.
Things were not nearly as smooth for Lake Erie starter Brent Lysander, who lasted just three innings on the night. He yielded four runs on four hits alone in the third as Brad Hough, Tim Grogan, and Justin Pickett all had run scoring singles. Hough added a sacrifice fly to give Florence a 5-0 lead in the sixth, although it might have been a grand slam home run if not for a superb catch at the wall by Lake Erie left fielder Tim Binkoski.
The Crushers finally scored on Saul in the seventh as a double-play ball hit by Eddie Tisdale scored Gordon Gronkowski.
The Crushers fall to 23-17 on the season and will return to action on Sunday evening as they'll play the rubber match against the Freedom. Kevin Skogley will start for Lake Erie against Florence's Julio Soriano.
The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest.
