LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders continue their hot play through the month of July, securing a series-opening 7-3 win before a crowd of 9,884 at Huntington Park Thursday Night.

The night began with Columbus taking the lead in the bottom of the first on three hits. Yu Chang tripled home Drew Maggi off Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Erik Swanson before scoring on a double by Eric Haase for a 2-0 lead.

The RailRiders evened the score in the second against the Clippers and starting pitcher Shane Bieber. Francisco Diaz singled to dive in Tyler Austin and Abiatal Avelino to tie the game 2-2.

From there, Mike Ford added to the lead in the 4th inning. Bieber was scheduled to throw only the first three innings, before handing the ball off to lefty MLB rehabber Andrew Miller. Mike Ford demolished a home run off the videoboard in right field off the multi-time All-Star to give the RailRiders the lead.

Columbus rallied with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game, but that would be the final hit of the night for the Clippers. RailRiders pitching recorded the final 15 outs without allowing a hit, which allowed SWB to put a run on the board in the fifth inning and three more runs in the 8th to provide cushion for the bullpen down the stretch.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues a four-game set in Columbus Friday night at Huntington Park. The RailRiders have RHP Luis Cessa (2-0, 2.08) on the mound against LHP Adam Wilk (4-7, 4.13). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with Adam Marco and Adam Giardino on NEPA Sports Radio The Game and the RailRiders Radio Network. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre returns to PNC Field on July 24 to open a six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Charlotte Knights.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON: After taking 2-of-3 from the Toledo Mud Hens to begin the week, the RailRiders are 9-8 overall this season against the I.L. West Division. Entering Thursday's series opener, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre have outscored the Columbus Clippers 26-11 and have won 3-of-4 games head-to-head against Columbus this season.

GETTING IN POSITION: The RailRiders were 7-5 on April 17, marking the last day they would be on the inside of the playoff cut in the International League for quite a while. It wasn't until Wednesday morning that SWB found itself back in the playoff picture (Game No. 94), spanning 82 games and being as many as 6 games under .500 along the way (27-33).

ROLLING THROUGH THE BREAK: Over the last 35G the RailRiders have own a 24-11 record to bring them up to 2nd place in the International League North standings. The RailRiders are 8-0-3 in their last 11 series and won 6-of-7 games leading into the All-Star Break and have won 5-of-8 games since. They still have not lost a series since dropping 2-out-of-3 games June 5-7 against the Durham Bulls at PNC Field.

PITCHING STAYS HOT: The RailRiders pitching staff had turned a corner since the calendar flipped to July. In the first 16G in July, the staff has thrown 142.0 innings and has allowed 45R/36ER for a 2.28 ERA. The team entered July with a 3.94 staff ERA and has lowered it to 3.65 despite one performance against Rochester where they allowed 9R/9ER on 16H to the Red Wings. If you subtract that effort from the month of July, in the other 15G the RailRiders have pitched to a 1.81 ERA (36R/27ER in 134.0 IP).

SLINGING IT: The RailRiders continue to get a strong performance out of its bullpen over the last month. In the last 27G since June 17, the bullpen arms have combined for 97.2 IP, 50 H (4.6 H/9) and 21R/16ER (1.47 ERA). Over the last 5G specifically, the bullpen has thrown 17.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H (2-for-51, .039 BAA) with 23 K (11.9 K/9). Over his last 5G individually, RHP Cody Carroll has thrown 5.0 IP without allowing a hit (0-for-15) and striking out 10 in the process.
