Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders saw their four-game winning streak halted by a 4-3 setback to the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) at PNC Field on Thursday night. The RailRiders went 4-2 on their six-game homestand.
PLUCKED: The RailRiders finished 5-2 in the season series against the Mud Hens with both of the losses coming by a single score. SWB out-hit Toledo .296-.207 and outscored it, 37-21. The RailRiders' pitchers amassed a 2.76 ERA and 64 strikeouts over 62.0 IP while the Mud Hens' hurlers composed a 4.87 ERA and walked 32 in 61 IP (4.72/9 IP).
JUDGMENT DAY: Aaron Judge went 2-for-3 with a double, his team-leading 13th homer, two RBIs and a walk. He saw his batting average bottom out at .221 after an 0-for-3 day versus Columbus on June 2 during an 0-for-24 tailspin. Since then he has reached base in 17 of 19, going 25-for-67 with six homers, 16 RBIs, 15 walks and 23 runs scored. In that time he has slashed .373/.500/.716/1.216. His season-long OBP has risen by nearly 60 points (.285-.344) with 48% of his overall walk total in the 19-game run. All six of those homers have come over his last 11 games played and four in his last five games. He leads the team in big flies (13) and RBIs (41). Only Columbus' Jesus Aguilar and Rochester's Adam Brett Walker with 14 homers apiece have bashed more dingers in the IL than Judge.
ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders own the IL's best road record at 22-13. They stand on pace to win 45 games away from NEPA. That would tie the franchise record set by Marc Bombard's 2002 Red Barons who won 91 total games with players like Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd, Brett Myers and Joe Roa. At PNC Field, SWB has slashed .254/.315/.386/.701 while scoring 4.00 runs/game. On the road, the team has slashed .268/.343/.406/.749 while scoring 4.89 runs/game.
SWIPER NO SWIPING!: Anthony Gose became the first SWB foe to take multiple bags in a single game when he stole both second and third in the third inning. Add Jordany Valdespin's take of second base in the second and Toledo became the second squad to steal three bases against the RailRiders all season. Rochester took three bags in the season's second game on April 8. That seven-inning affair at PNC Field also saw Kyle Haynes as the starting pitcher. Catcher Gary Sanchez leads the IL's backstops with his 41% caught-stealing rate. But opponents have been successful in 10 of their 12 attempts when Haynes has pitched including a 6-for-7 showing with Sanchez behind the plate. Minus Haynes' outings, Sanchez has gotten his man eight times in 15 attempts (53%).
TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: SWB is the only IL squad with double-digit shutouts on the year including two over its last four games. Tommy Phelps' hurlers rank among the IL's best in: ERA (1st, 3.11), WHIP (1st, 1.20), H/9 IP (1st, 7.9), K/9IP (2nd, 8.4), K:BB ratio (2nd, 2.88) and saves (T-3rd, 22). SWB is on pace to post 23 shutouts, which would shatter the franchise record of 15 set by the 2003 Red Barons. Last year's Rochester Red Wings logged 21 shutouts, the most by an IL squad since Tidewater's staff fired 21 shutouts in 1975.
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: SWB dives back into divisional play with the first of 17 straight against its divisional brothers before the All-Star break. Each of the IL's three best records reside in the division between Rochester (45-29), SWB (43-31) and Lehigh Valley (42-32). The first-place Red Wings (20-17) are the only IL North team that boasts a divisional record more than one game above .500.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Tonight also ignites a season-long 10-game road trip for the RailRiders. While the 2014 unit played 10 straight road games, the first two of that string were followed by the All-Star break. SWB has not played a true road trip this long since an 11-game run at Durham, Norfolk and Pawtucket from June 24-July 3, 2011. The 2012 team never technically played a "road trip" that long, but did not have a single home game as the team played "home" contests in six different stadiums during PNC Field's massive reconstruction.
TEIX MESSAGE: Mark Teixeira concluded his scheduled three-game rehab assignment with the RailRiders by going 0-for-4 as the first baseman and three-hole hitter. He ended his SWB tenure 1-for-9 with an RBI, a walk and a strikeout.
