Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - The Scranton RailRiders used three home runs from Tyler Austin and back-to-back-to-back blasts in the 10th inning to withstand a Pawtucket Red Sox comeback attempt for an 8-5, series-opening victory on Friday night at McCoy Stadium.
The PawSox (38-37) trailed 3-0 and 5-3 but chipped away in the middle innings, culminating with Henry Ramos' RBI triple against Matt Wotherspoon (1-0) with no outs in the seventh inning.
Pawtucket stranded Ramos at third base following a grounder to third, a pop out and a fly out.
The PawSox also threatened with runners on the corners and the game still tied in the ninth inning. Dan Butler singled, advanced to second on a balk and to third on a groundout, but Aneury Tavarez popped out to shortstop to end the frame.
The RailRiders (44-31) wasted no time taking the lead in extra innings, homering in their first three 10th-inning at-bats against Robby Scott (3-2).
Donovan Solano hit the first pitch of the frame over the left field fence (3). The next batter, Aaron Judge, nearly clocked a ball to left center field out of McCoy Stadium (14). Gary Sanchez followed with a line drive homer (8) to left.
It is the first time Pawtucket has allowed back-to-back-to-back home runs since such records were first kept in 1977.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the PawSox, tying their season high. Scranton has won 16 of its last 19 meetings with the Pawtucket at McCoy Stadium dating to 2014.
The PawSox once again had two rehabbing players in the game.
Ryan Hanigan played five innings at catcher in the second game of his rehab assignment. He went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch, singlingin his first at-bat and lining a ball to right field in his third plate appearance that was caught by a diving Aaron Judge.
"He looked good and caught well," said manager Kevin Boles.
Behind the plate, Hanigan fired two strikes to nail runners at second base. He picked off Pete Kozma to end the second inning and caught Donovan Solano stealing for the second out of the fifth.
Brock Holt played seven innings in left field in his fourth rehab game. He hit the ball hard but went 0-for-4. He lined out in each of his first two at-bats.
"Holt did a nice job and he was encouraged about his day today," said Boles. "He got challenged four times out in the outfield, had a real clean break on a ball and had good closing speed on a ball coming in."
Meanwhile, Scranton's initial damage came courtesy of Austin's five RBI.
Austin smashed an opposite-field home run in his first at-bat, a three-run shot with two outs in the first inning that made it 3-0 Scranton.
He led off the fourth inning with a thunderous blast to the back of the berm in left center field that extended the RailRiders' advantage to 4-2.
Austin's third round-tripper (4, 5, 6) led off the sixth inning, falling just over the short wall into Scranton's bullpen, again increasing the lead to two runs. He became the third player in RailRiders history to blast three home runs in a game.
"I got some good pitches that I could handle and put my A-swing on them," said Austin.
All three blasts came against Pawtucket starter Roenis Elias, who also surrendered two home runs to Seattle's Franklin Gutierrez in his start for Boston against Seattle last Friday.
Aside from the three home runs, Elias scattered five other hits and three walks in 5.1 innings of work. He had entered the night with a 2.00 ERA in his previous five Triple-A starts.
Elias walked the final two batters he faced, but reliever Chandler Shepherd pitched out of sixth-inning trouble in his second Triple-A outing. Shepherd tossed 2.2 perfect innings.
After collecting a pair of singles and stranding both runners in each of the first two frames, the PawSox finally cashed in against Scranton starter Luis Severino in the third inning.
Following a walk and a hit batter, Rusney Castillo drilled a two-run double to center field. Castillo also drove in Pawtucket's third run of the game with a fifth-inning groundout that cut the deficit to 4-3.
"It was good to see us come back but we did miss some opportunities late in the game," said Boles.
In the defeat, Jantzen Witte scored three runs, while Henry Ramos, Mike Miller and Jose Vinicio all recorded a pair of hits.
