Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
YESTERDAY: The RailRiders lost their first road game of the season, a 4-1 final against the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field.
HOT START: Slade Heathcott has six of SWB's 18 hits through three games. He has gone 6-for-11 (.545/.583/.636/1.220). The rest of the team has gone a collective 12-for-80 (.150) with 25 strikeouts (31% of at-bats). Heathcott has also scored three of the team's eight runs.
RED WINGING IT: The RailRiders have dropped 16 of their last 22 in the Flower City. The team has won consecutive games at Frontier Field just once since taking the first three during an April 2013 visit on the backend of that season's first road trip.
THE LONE RUN: Prospect catcher Gary Sanchez doubled home the RailRiders' lone run on Sunday. It was the team's only extra-base hit of the game.
OFFENSIVE WOES: The RailRiders went 1-for-8 with men in scoring position and stranded a dozen on the bases. The team has failed to score in 21 of its 24 innings through three games and enters today scoreless in seven straight frames. Last year's team ranked among the IL's best in batting average (1st, .271), runs scored (1st, 4.3/game), on-base percentage (1st, .339) and slugging (4th, .389).
LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Last season's IL Rookie of the Year, Ben Gamel, delivered the best defensive play of the young season yesterday. After consecutive hits started the home fourth, Gamel leapt at the wall in foul ground down the third-base line. He reached his glove over the tall railing and pulled back a James Beresford pop fly for a highlight-caliber out. At the plate, however, Gamel has gone 1-for-13 with no walks and five strikeouts as the team's leadoff hitter. As the fourth outfielder to begin 2015, Gamel hit .383/.448/.617/1.064 last April en route to a season-long slashes of .300/.358/.472/.830.
PINDER SWIPES LEFT: Reliever Branden Pinder authored the RailRiders' most dominant pitching display with a pair of scoreless innings at the end of the game. He whiffed four, walked none and allowed just one hit.
COLD SPELL: The RailRiders were scheduled to open their road schedule at Rochester on Saturday, but forecasted frigid temperatures and biting winds that made for a wind chill of 18 degrees postponed the game until April 29. Yesterday's one-game series was played with the wind chill in the high-20s.
ROSTER ROLL CALL: This year's SWB club touts six of the Yankees' Top 30 prospects according to Baseball America and multiple returning stars. The prospect list is highlighted by Sanchez (No. 2) and outfielder Aaron Judge (No. 3). The publication has dubbed Judge as the Yankees' "Best Power Hitter" in the minors and the owner of the farm's "Best Outfield Arm".
NEMESIS: The RailRiders posted more wins against Pawtucket (13-6) than any other team in 2015. They went 5-3 in the Ocean State and 8-3 at PNC Field. They have taken eight of 11 and 19 of 25 in the series going back to 2014. That includes wins in 12 of 15 at McCoy Stadium, outscoring the PawSox, 69-37.
OFF THE RAILS: Rochester starter Jose Berrios struck out nine over five innings...In his last two starts against SWB he has whiffed 19 over 12 innings...Of the dozen SWB position players that have had at-bats, just four have multiple hits while eight have multiple strikeouts...The RailRiders led the IL with 42 road wins last season...They also posted the most divisional wins in the circuit, going 52-38 (.578) against their IL North brothers.
