(Pawtucket, RI) - A five-run fifth inning led the Rail Riders to a 6-3 victory in their first matchup of the season with Pawtucket in front of 3,222 fans on Monday evening at McCoy Stadium.
The PawSox (2-3) and reliever Roman Mendez allowed three extra-base hits in the fifth inning. Ben Gamel led off the inning with a flyball to right field but Justin Maxwell lost the ball in the twilight and Gamel reached with a triple. Aaron Judge followed with a double and after a wild pitch, Slade Heathcott delivered a sacrifice fly. Cesar Puello would later cap the rally with a three-run blast over the right field fence, his first home run as a member of the Yankees organization.
Outside of the fifth inning, Pawtucket pitchers allowed only one run and four total hits. Starter Brian Johnson (0-1) surrendered one run and struck out four in a four-inning season debut.
Anthony Varvaro and Heath Hembree combined for three scoreless innings of relief, allowing only one baserunner in the final three innings.
The PawSox offense got on the board in the fifth inning, when Marco Hernandez drove home two runs on a single to right field. The third and final run came on Sam Travis' line-drive home run over the right field fence to lead off the bottom of the ninth. The solo shot was Travis' first Triple-A homer and the second for Pawtucket this season.
