International League Names Players of the Week
Published on April 11, 2016 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today Durham infielder Richie Shaffer and Pawtucket pitcher Henry Owens have been named the League's first Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the 2016 season, covering the period from April 7-Â10.  This is the second career IL weekly award for Shaffer, who won the same honor late in the 2015 season (Aug. 17-Â23).  Owens is the first player from Pawtucket to claim an IL weekly award since fellow pitcher Brian Johnson (April 20-Â26, 2015).
RICHIE SHAFFER, Durham Bulls  IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
One of the hottest hitters in the International League at the end of the 2015 season has picked up right where he left off.  Through the first four days of action in 2016, Durham's Richie Shaffer is hitting .538 and leads the circuit with seven hits, seven RBI, and four walks.  He collected multiple hits in each of his first three games, including a pair of doubles Friday, to help the Bulls get out of the gate with a 3-Â1 record.  Durham's versatile cleanup hitter has already served as the club's first baseman, third baseman, and designated hitter.  25-Âyear-Âold Richie Shaffer is in his fifth season as a professional player after being selected in the first round of the 2012 draft by Tampa Bay.  He made both his Triple-ÂA and Major League debuts last season, hitting .270 with 19 home runs and 45 RBI in 69 games for the Bulls.  Shaffer is a native of Flemington, New Jersey.
HENRY OWENS, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
After rain pushed Opening Day to Friday, Pawtucket left-Âhander Henry Owens was on top of his game when the season finally commenced.  He took a no-Âhitter into the fifth inning of a masterful performance against Buffalo, ultimately allowing just one hit and three walks over 6.0 frames while striking out eight.  Owens led the PawSox to a 2-Â0 blanking of the Bisons for his first victory of the 2016 campaign.  23-Âyear-Âold Henry Owens is in his fifth season as a professional pitcher after being selected in the first round of the 2011 draft by Boston.  Owens first reached Triple-ÂA in 2014, and last season he started 11 games for Boston (going 4-Â4 with a 4.57 ERA) in his first taste of big league action.  Owens is a native of Orange, California.
