Richie Shaffer Named International League Batter of the Week

DURHAM, NC - The International League announced today Durham Bulls infielder Richie Shaffer was named the league's Batter of the Week for the season's opening weekend.

Shaffer, 25, went 7 for 13 over the team's first four games, in which he helped lead the Bulls to a 3-1 record. The Raleigh resident leads the IL with seven RBI, and is tied for the league lead with seven hits and four walks. The Clemson University product has reached base safely in 11 of his 17 plate appearances, and has reached base safely in all four games he's played.

The award marks the second time the Charlotte native has been named IL Batter of the Week, after earning the honor in August of 2015. In his Triple-A career - spanning 73 games between 2015 and 2016 - Shaffer has 52 RBI and a .284 batting average to accompany 19 home runs.

The Pawtucket Red Sox' left-hander Henry Owens was named the IL Pitcher of the Week.
