Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SUSPENDED DISBELIEF: A deluge of runs came along with hard rain as the RailRiders' seven-run third was suspended with two outs and an 8-0 lead on the board. SWB and Gwinnett will finish the contest and play a seven-inning game thereafter. The contest has already stretched SWB pitching's longest scoreless streak of the season to 18 innings surpassing a 17-inning run from May 19-22.
NEW BLOOD: Some of the RailRiders' more recent additions figured prominently in a 7-0 shutout win over the Gwinnett Braves Tuesday night. The RailRiders' eighth shutout win of the year tied them for the sixth-most blankings in the International League this season. The win combined with Lehigh Valley's 7-6 loss to Buffalo meant SWB did not own at least a share of last place in the IL North for the first time since entering play on July 1 in 5th.
THE NEW GUY: The latest addition to the RailRiders, third baseman Rob Segedin, drove in the game-winning run with his ninth-inning sacrifice fly on Monday. The Old Tappan, N.J. product upped the ante with his first career Triple-A hit for the only run SWB needed Tuesday night in the fourth. In his next at-bat, Segedin bashed an impressive grand slam, the first of his career, to left field off veteran Pedro Beato to make it 5-0. Segedin finished with a career-best five RBIs, the most by a RailRider in a single game all season. Melky Mesa was the last RailRider to drive in five. He turned the trick on Aug. 9, 2013, coincidentally enough in Buffalo against the team he now plays for, the Bisons. Segedin showed shades of this in recent days. He hit .275/.386/.408/.794 in 80 games with Double-A Trenton before his promotion, delivering 17 doubles, seven homers and 44 RBIs. The RBI total ranked third on the team behind only MLB.com's No. 1 prospect for the Yankees, Gary Sanchez, and the farm's top home run man, Pete O'Brien, who ranks third in the minors with 30 jacks. Segedin was enjoying his best month of the season when he got the call. In 17 games this month with Trenton he hit .403/.471/.597/1.068 with a team-best 12 RBIs.
NO RUNS FOR YOU: The RailRiders' youngest hurler, 23-year-old right-hander Bryan Mitchell (1-1), tossed five scoreless frames at the start for his first Triple-A win. It came in just his third start at the level. He induced a pair of double plays from clean-up man Joey Terdoslavich to thwart threats in the first and third. He faced the minimum after working the second giddy up. After enduring walk issues on the season, he issued just one free pass and struck out three.
A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS: A trio of relievers finished the donut delivery with Tyler Webb delivering two scoreless innings while Rich Hill and Danny Burawa fired a frame apiece. Webb and Hill were making just their second SWB appearances. For Webb, who turned 24 on Sunday, it was the second appearance at Triple-A on his two-year pro career.
ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders own their first three-game road winning streak since June 27-29 when they won a series finale at Syracuse and swept Lehigh Valley on a short two-game set. The last four-game road winning streak came during a six-game surge from May 18-28 when SWB claimed the final three at Pawtucket (May 18-20) and the first three at Louisville (May 26-28).
SECOND HOME: The RailRiders have won 11 of their last 12 games at Coolray Field going back to the 2011 season.
DOWN THE STRETCH: The RailRiders have 41 games left with 25 (61%) of them coming at home. Thanks to this eight-game road trip out of the break, the RailRiders will have gone two weeks without a home game when they finally play at PNC Field again tomorrow. That starts a 10-game homestand and a span with 18 out of 20 games in Moosic for Dave Miley's team.
WALK LIKE A RAILRIDER: Tuesday's game saw the RailRiders draw a season-best eight walks.
