Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the finale of a two-game set to the Buffalo Bisons, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon from Coca-Cola Field. The Chiefs brought the go-ahead run to the plate twice in a ninth-inning rally, but Buffalo hung on after seven shutout innings from left-hander Raul Valdes.
Buffalo (51-53) grabbed the game's first run with a third-inning home run by Ryan Schimpf. With one out, the Bisons' third baseman took Taylor Hill deep on a fly ball over the center-field wall, giving Buffalo a 1-0 lead.
Hill surrendered just the one run in four innings in his return from the Disabled List and first start in 11 days. Once he exited, Buffalo grabbed a pair of unearned runs in the fifth against right-hander Josh Roenicke. Jonathan Diaz started the inning with a single and stole second base. Darin Mastroianni followed with a line drive to center field that Eury Perez dropped, resulting in a three-base error that scored Diaz for a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Kevin Pillar knocked a sacrifice fly into right field for a three-run advantage.
Syracuse (61-45), meanwhile, didn't score through eight innings of scoreless baseball from Valdes and a Steve Delabar. In the ninth, however, the Chiefs rallied against International League All-Star Bobby Korecky. With one out, Tyler Moore bashed a solo home run over the left-field fence, slicing the lead to 3-1. Brandon Laird followed with a single and Destin Hood walked, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. However, Sandy Leon flied out to center field and Will Rhymes lined out to right field, closing the door on the Bisons' win.
Syracuse next returns home to begin a four-game set with the Gwinnett Braves on Friday night at 7 p.m. Chiefs right-hander Mitch Lively is scheduled to oppose left-hander Daniel Rodriguez.
