Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, S.C. - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, today announced several changes to the club's training camp roster. Forwards Ryan Rashid and Andrew Dommett, as well as goaltender P.J. Musico, have each been signed to a standard player contract. In addition, four players have been released including Joey Holka, Tayler Thompson, Kyle Reynolds and Braely Torris.
With those moves, the Swamp Rabbits training camp roster now consists of 22 players.
Rashid, 25, was acquired by Greenville on September 25 when his rights were traded from Wichita for future considerations. He attended training camp with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers following a successful rookie campaign with the Elmira Jackals last season. In 65 games, he led Elmira with 25 assists and finished second on the club with 41 points. He added 16 goals, 51 penalty minutes and a +7 rating during that span. In addition, the second-year forward debuted with Elmira in 2013-14 and notched four points (2g, 2a) in just six contests.
Prior to turning pro, Rashid played four seasons at Niagara University from 2010-14, producing 88 points (38g, 50a) in 143 collegiate games. He helped lead the Purple Eagles to the American Hockey Association (AHA) regular season championship in 2012-13 and was named to the AHA All-Rookie Team in 2010-11 after amassing a career-best 13 goals and 26 points in 34 games.
Before attending Niagara, the 6'2, 194-pounder played junior hockey for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and the St. Louis Bandits of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). Rashid helped St. Louis capture the Robertson Cup as the NAHL champion in 2008-09.
Dommett, 25, looks to begin his professional career this season after spending each of the last four years at Lake Superior State University. In 128 appearances, the Major, Saskatchewan native produced 17 points (9g, 8a) and 61 penalty minutes for the Lakers. He signed a professional tryout contract with Greenville on August 7 and dressed in both preseason games, scoring once in Friday's exhibition opener at South Carolina.
The 5'11, 192-pound forward also played four seasons with the Kindersley Klippers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) from 2007-11.
Musico, 25, spent each of the last three seasons between the pipes for the Penn State University Nittany Lions. He went 6-5-1 during the 2014-15 campaign and amassed a 3.05 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in a career-high 13 appearances. Musico was also named the 2015 recipient of the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award as voted by the Hockey Commissioners Association.
A native of Orange, California, Musico contributed to Penn State's program early, earning the team's first win at the NCAA Division I level with a 32-save performance against AIC on October 13, 2012. He also stopped all 34 shots he faced against Army on October 26, 2012 to record the first shutout in Penn State's NCAA history.
The 6'1, 198-pound goaltender was previously on a tryout agreement with Greenville and made one appearance during the preseason, stopping all nine shots he faced in 32:46 of playing time last Friday at South Carolina.
