Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Back from his spot start in the big leagues, Fresno Grizzlies starting pitcher Eric Surkamp allowed one run and three hits over seven innings to earn the winning decision in the Grizzlies' 7-1 victory over the Round Rock Express on Tuesday at Chukchansi Park.
Surkamp, who last only 2 2/3 innings in his start with San Francisco on July 23rd, set a new season-high for innings pitched on Tuesday. He also struck out five and walked one on 99 pitches. The only run he allowed was via a solo home run by Joey Butler in the second inning.
The Grizzlies offense backed up Surkamp with plenty of run support. Chris Dominguez drove in three of the Grizzlies' seven runs, including two with a double in the second inning that eventually proved to be the game-winners. Dominguez drove in his third run of the game with a groundout to score Johnny Monell in the fourth inning.
Fresno scored two more runs in the fourth when Ydwin Villegas hit into a force out that allowed Hector Sanchez to score. An errant throw by Round Rock second baseman Yangervis Solarte to first base on the same play allowed Juan Perez to score from second base and give the Grizzlies a 5-1 lead.
The Grizzlies capped their scoring when Monell and Sanchez drove in a run with a single and force out, respectively, in the seventh inning. Monell and Sanchez both finished the game with two hits and an RBI.
Nick Noonan led the Grizzlies with three hits. It was Noonan's first multi-hit game with Fresno since July 18th.
Noonan's three base knocks also contributed to Fresno's 13 hits, giving him eight straight games with at least nine hits.
Round Rock starting pitcher Jake Brigham allowed seven runs (four earned) on 13 hits over 6 1/3 innings in the losing decision.
Jake Dunning and Fabio Castillo each turned in a scoreless inning of relief for Fresno. Dunning threw a perfect eighth inning in his return to the Grizzlies after being optioned on Monday.
The Grizzlies and Express will meet in game two of their four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 pm. The Grizzlies will start left-hander Mike Kickham against Round Rock's righty Evan Meek.
