Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers suffered a 4-1 series-opening loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Storm Chasers rolled to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Catcher Brett Hayes grounded into a force out that cleared the way for Ben Broussard to score the night's first run. Gorkys Hernandez hit an RBI single that plated Hayes two batters later.
Tacoma's deficit stretched to 4-0 following another two-run frame organized by Omaha in the fourth. Irving Falu lined a single that scored Quintin Berry, and Chrisitian Colon drove in the outfielder Hernandez with an RBI double.
The Rainiers lone run in the contest arrived in the bottom of the seventh. First baseman Jesus Montero notched his first career home run with the Rainiers after leading off the inning with a solo shot to right field.
As a team, Tacoma's lineup combined to tally eight hits against the Storm Chasers, led by 2-for-3 efforts from infielders Scott Savastano and Carlos Triunfel. Montero's home run in the seventh served as the club's only extra-base hit.
Taijuan Walker was dealt his first loss in his sixth Triple-A start after allowing all four of Omaha's runs on nine hits over six innings of work. The right-hander struck out four and issued a pair of walks.
Reliever Chance Ruffin fanned four through two shutout frames in the seventh and eighth. Jonathan Arias issued one walk over a scoreless inning of work out of the bullpen in the ninth.
The Rainiers (60-51) host the second game of a four-game series with Omaha at 7 p.m. tomorrow, July 31. Right-hander Blake Beavan (4-3, 5.37) is slated to start for Tacoma against Storm Chasers left-hander Chris Dwyer (7-8, 3.46).
