Iowa Cubs News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - The Salt Lake Bees (62-49) edged the Iowa Cubs (51-60) 5-4 at Spring Mobile Ballpark tonight, extending the Cubs' road losing streak to eight straight games. The Cubs have lost five straight on this current road trip and have reached a season-low nine games under .500 for the third time this year.

The Bees claimed the early lead when Matt Long led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run off Cubs' starter Yoanner Negrin. The Cubs answered with three runs in the top of the second against Jarrett Grube on consecutive doubles by Jae-Hoon Ha, Edwin Maysonet, and Luis Flores. Those were the only runs Grube (5-4) would allow through six innings of work. He walked one and struck out eight.

The Bees got one run right back in the second and took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Drew Heid led off with a single and scored on a double by Long to tie the game. After a groundout, Luis Rodriguez drove in Long with a double that gave the Bees a 4-3 lead and knocked Negrin (3-5) from the game. Alberto Cabrera came in and gave up a double to Efren Navarro that completed the rally, but Cabrera also worked the sixth and struck out two.

The Cubs pulled back to within a run when Ha led off the top of the seventh with an opposite field home run off Josh Judy, but Jeremy Berg struck out the side in the eighth and Cory Rasmus finished the ninth to earn the save in his Bees' debut. Chang-Yong Lim and Brian Schlitter each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Cubs.

Both Omaha and Memphis won tonight, so the Cubs are now three games back of the Storm Chasers and two back of the Redbirds in the American Northern Division standings.

The Cubs and Bees play game two of this series tomorrow night at 8:05 Central time at Spring Mobile Ballpark. RH Justin Grimm (1-1, 9.39) will start for the Cubs against RH Billy Buckner (6-2, 4.50) for the Bees. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
