Wichita Wind Surge News Release

MIDLAND, TX - The Wind Surge used two four-run innings to mount a comeback and defeat the Midland RockHounds 8-4 in game three of the series.

The Surge struggled early as they found themselves in a 4-0 hole after four innings completed. However, the Surge wiped away the deficit with four runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning. Peter Mooney opened the scoring with a single up the middle that allowed Yeltsin Encarnacion to score from second for the first run of the night for Wichita. Aaron Whitefield grounded to the shortstop with the bases loaded but beat out a potential double-play at first to keep the inning alive and score David Bañuelos. Jermaine Palacios kept the line moving with another RBI single to right field for Wichita in the inning, scoring Mooney. In the next at-bat, BJ Boyd tied the game by hustling down the first base line to beat out a throw to first and drive in the fourth run of the inning.

Another four-run inning in the sixth catapulted Wichita ahead 8-4, doubling what was a 4-0 margin for Midland just two innings ago. With two on and nobody out, Jose Miranda scorched his third hit of the game past the diving third baseman for an RBI double to score Bañuelos and give Wichita the 5-4 advantage. Miranda finished 5-6 at the plate tonight. Aaron Whitefield scored Mooney and Miranda in the next at-bat with an RBI single to center field then advancing himself to second on the throw to the plate. Andrew Bechtold then brought Whitefield home on a deep ball that bounced off the right-center field wall, eclipsing another big inning for the Wind Surge.

Ryan Mason and Alex Phillips kept the RockHounds scoreless during Wichita's run on offense. Mason allowed just one hit and struck out four in his 2.1 innings of relief and earned the win. Phillips cruised Wichita to the final frame by allowing just one hit and striking out two in his 2.1 innings of work.

Midland scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make the score closer, but Wichita's eight runs scored proved too much to overcome.

NOTES: With a win today, the Wind Surge have won their fifth consecutive road game. Jose Miranda broke the Wind Surge individual single game record for most hits in a game with 5 hits tonight (previous record: 4 - BJ Boyd, Leobaldo Cabrera, Jermaine Palacios). Wichita added Chris Williams from Class-A Cedar Rapids today.

COMING UP: Wichita will play game four against the Midland RockHounds tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00 pm from Midland, Texas. Wichita will start RHP Jordan Balazovic (0-0, 3.72 ERA) against Midland's RHP Kyle Friedrichs (0-2, 8.47 ERA). RADIO/TV: KGSO 1410 AM and 93.9 FM, MiLB.TV and Windsurge.com.
