Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - A pair of grand slams proved to be the downfall for the Atlantic City Surf, as the visiting Worcester Tornadoes won both of Tuesday evening's Can-Am League contests by four-run margins, 5-1 and 8-4.
In the first game of the evening, the Tornadoes jumped ahead early. After back-to-back first-inning singles by RF Scott Grimes and RF B.J. Weed, C Alex Trezza was intentionally walked with one out. SS Chuck Jeroloman then slugged a grand slam to put the Tornadoes ahead, 4-0.
Atlantic City responded with a run in the fourth on 2B Brad Thoma's solo shot to left, before Weed doubled home a run in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game.
It was more than enough run support for Worcester starter Matt Weagle (9-6), who limited the Surf to the one run on six hits in five innings of work, striking out eight. J.C. Huguet (8-5) took the loss for Atlantic City, allowing five runs on nine hits with eight K's, pitching all seven innings. It was the third complete game of the season for the righthander.
For the Surf, Thoma was 3-for-3 in the game, while LF Joe Burke and 1B Eddie Kim had two hits each. Grimes led the Tornadoes' attack by going 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
The second game saw Worcester jump on the board in the first inning on 1B Chris Colabello's two-run home run. Atlantic City halved the lead with a run in the bottom of the frame; SS Anthony Granato scored when DH Clyde Williams grounded into a double play.
The Tornadoes increased their lead to 3-1 in the third on Grimes' solo blast to center, but the Surf tied the game in their half of the third on RBI singles from William and Kim.
Worcester then took the lead for good in the fifth. In a similar situation to the first game, with runners on second and third, DH Omar Pena was intentionally walked to load the bases. 3B Mike MacMillan then laced a home run down the left-field line to make the score 7-3, Tornadoes. Weed later doubled home Grimes to add an insurance run. Atlantic City scored a run in the fifth on RF Jason Hurst's RBI single, but it was not enough as the game ended with the 8-4 final.
Grimes had another solid game, going 3-for-4 to finish the day 7-for-8, while Weed, Colabello and Jeroloman added a pair of hits in the nightcap. For Atlantic City, Hurst and Burke both went 2-for-3.
Justin Edwards (1-0) threw five innings for the win, while Rory Shortell (7-3) was saddled with the loss for Atlantic City, his first in six outings.
The two teams meet for the second game of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. In a battle of lefthanders, Brian Rodaway (9-6) is on the hill for the Surf (17-10), while Ryan Lobban (4-1) throws for Worcester (17-12). It's another Wawa Wednesday at the ballpark, with all fans receiving coupons for $1 off sub sandwiches at area Wawa convenience stores.
