Rapidz drop tight decision to Skyhawks

(AUGUSTA, NJ) Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - Justin Knoff scattered five hits and gave up just one run over eight innings to pitch the Sussex Skyhawks to a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Rapidz on Tuesday night at Skylands Park. Sussex has now won six in a row and nine out of its last 10.

Knoff and Ottawa's Noel Baca were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first seven innings. Each pitcher gave up a run in the second, but lit up goose eggs on the scorebard until the eighth inning. Knoff walked no one and struck out five en route to the win. Matt Petrusek pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 17th save.

Baca gave up two runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. He walked one and struck out seven, but was tagged with the loss.

Sussex broke the 1-1 game in the bottom of the eighth inning when designated hitter Mario Delgado lined a two out single to right, scoring Kevin Rios from second to make it 2-1.

Matt Weston hit a solo home run, his 18th of the season, for Sussex.

The teams return to action at Skylands Park on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. for the second game of a three game series.

Before the game the Rapidz announced the release of their backup catcher Mike Muscato. In 10 games since signing with the Rapidz Muscato was hitting for .103, with three hits in 29 at-bats. Two of his hits were homeruns and he collected five RBI.
