New Jersey Jackals News Release
Nashua, NH - Despite being outhit by the Pride 12-11, the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Nashua Pride 10-2 on Tuesday night at Historic Holman Stadium. The win in the game that began with a one hour, 21 minute rain delay snaps New Jersey's 15-game road losing streak. New Jersey starter Tom Atlee (2-4) turned in his best start of the season, earning the win while hurling six shutout innings and collecting five strikeouts. Nashua right-hander Matt O'Brien (1-1) took the loss, surrendering seven runs - six earned - in 6 2/3 innings on the mound.
The Jackals wasted no time jumping on Nashua starter Matt O'Brien for three early runs. In the first inning, Jackals 2B Marcus Sanders led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by SS Bryant Nelson. With runners on the corners and no outs, 1B Juan Tejeda plated Sanders on a fielder's choice. With Tejeda aboard at first, DH Luke Allen then lofted a fly ball to right which was misplayed by Nashua RF Vinny Pennell to place runners on first and second. On an attempted steal of third by Tejeda, Nashua C Chris Torres fired the ball into right field, enabling Tejeda to score to make it 2-0 New Jersey. Jackals C Matt Lauderdale followed with an RBI single to give the Jackals a 3-0 lead before Nashua came up to bat in the first inning.
In the top of the third inning, the Jackals extended their lead to 5-0 when Tejeda crushed his team-leading 12th home run of the season to left center field. That score held until the top of the seventh inning when the Jackals turned two walks into a pair of runs thanks to a two-run single by Nelson which extended New Jersey's lead to 7-0. In the eighth inning, the Jackals once again plated a pair of runs on an RBI double by RF Marcos Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly off the bat of 3B David Urias to take a 9-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pride broke through against reliever Brandon Martin. With runners on the corners and one out, 2B Ismael Castro laced an RBI single before LF Jerod Edmondson followed with a run-scoring base knock of his own to cut the Nashua deficit to 9-2. However, in the ninth inning, the Jackals used an RBI single from Rodriguez to cap the scoring at 10-2. In the contest, Tejeda paced the Jackals' offense with a 3-5 performance and there RBIs. For Nashua, Castro collected three hits in four trips to the plate. The Jackals and Pride continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week Isaac Pavlik (7-4, 3.61 ERA) to the mound against Nashua's Jason Paul (3-3, 4.16 ERA).
