Surf Drop Rubber Match in Ruud's First Start

Augusta, NJ- Charlie Ruud made his first start as a member of the Atlantic City Surf but didn't get much in the way of run support as the Surf fell to the Sussex Skyhawks 9-2 in front of 1602 Sunday afternoon at Skylands Park. The Surf collected 11 hits but left eight men on base and would manage one run in the first inning before going scoreless over the next seven. SS Anthony Granato provided that first run for the Surf with a leadoff solo home run off of Sussex LHP Craig Snipp. The run was the only one the Skyhawks southpaw would allow. Snipp (7-5) scattered nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts to pick up the win. Sussex got to Ruud early with two runs in the bottom of the first. After CF Ron Perodin flied out to start the inning, Ruud hit SS Kevin Rios with a pitch. RF Jorge Moreno followed with a single to move Rios to second and then 1B Matthew Weston's single plated Rios to make it 1-1. Moreno would score on a throwing error from Surf LF Joe to make it 2-1. After two straight strikeouts by Ruud to start the bottom of the second, Sussex 3B Jay Yaconetti smacked a double and Perodin followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1. Sussex would add a run apiece in the third and fourth innings on a Rios RBI double and an RBI single from OF Alex Frazier. The newly acquired Ruud (0-1) went five and two-thirds innings for the Surf, allowing seven runs (all earned) on 12 hits with no walks and seven strikeouts to take the loss. Sussex added two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to seal the deal. Surf reliever Derek Duclos allowed both runs in the seventh on a two-run double from Skyhawks C Yohanny Valera. Duclos pitched an inning and a third and surrendered three hits and added a strikeout. Atlantic City's best shot at a comeback came in the top of the 5th with two outs. CF Lucas Taylor doubled and Granato singled to move Taylor to third. The Surf threat quickly died when Joe Burke flied out to right field. Granato went 2-for-5 with the solo homer while Taylor added a 3-for-4 afternoon and an RBI single to pace the Surf offense. Perodin led the Sussex charge, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Rios finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in. Atlantic City has now lost four of its last five games and falls back to the fourth spot in the 2008 Can-Am League Playoff race. The Surf travel to New Hampshire Monday for a doubleheader and a 5-game series with the Nashua Pride. LHP Brian Rodaway (9-8) is scheduled to start game one of the twin bill. First pitch from Historic Holman Stadium is 5:05.
