Suns Win Ninth Straight, Complete Sweep of Mudcats

Jacksonville, Fla. - Vinny Rottino hit a two-run homerun in the third inning leading the Jacksonville Suns (13-6) to their ninth consecutive victory, a 3-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats (6-14) in front of 4,162 Wednesday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Suns starter Brad Stone (1-1) picked up the victory, giving up one run and four hits over six innings of work. Matt Peterson (2) saved the game with a one-hit ninth inning. Carolina starter Alexander Smit (0-2) fell in the loss, giving up three runs, three hits and six walks over five innings of work.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the first inning against Smit. Ozzie Martinez walked with one out before Michael Stanton belted a double off the top of the right-centerfield wall, scoring Martinez for a 1-0 Suns lead. The RBI was Stanton's 13th of the series.

Carolina tied the game in the second inning when Eric Eymann singled home Yonder Alonso for a 1-1 score.

The Suns took the lead for good in the third inning. Ozzie Martinez led off with a walk before Stanton and Mark Saccomanno flied out. Vinny Rottino next hit a homerun off the bottom of the left field pole, opening a 3-1 Suns lead.

The Mudcats best scoring chance came in the fourth inning on a leadoff single from Yonder Alonso followed by a ground rule double by Denis Phipps. Stone put the next three hitters down in order to end the threat, the first of nine consecutive outs to end the right-hander's start.
