Carolina Mudcats News Release
Jacksonville, FL --- Jacksonville's Vinny Rottino hit a two-run homer in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie, and Carolina could not overcome in falling for the 10th straight game 3-1 at the Baseball Grounds on Wednesday afternoon.
Rottino connected against Alexander Smit (L, 0-2) against the left field foul pole with a man aboard to lead the Suns (13-6) to their ninth straight victory. Carolina (6-14) was swept in its second straight five-game series, and heads to Mobile on the second longest skid in franchise history.
The Mudcats managed six hits in the game, with a single by Eric Eymann tying the game in the second inning. Yonder Alonso had walked, stolen a base and then scored on Eymann's hit to right-center.
Carolina's best opportunity to catch the Suns occurred in the fourth when Alonso singled and Denis Phipps hit a ground-rule double to left. However, Brad Stone (W, 1-1) retired the next two hitters on pop outs, and then recorded a flyout against Jake Kahaulelio to exit the inning.
The Mudcats' 10-game losing streak equals a skid in 1998, with the longest in the club's tenure at 12 games in 1992.
Matt Klinker starts the series opener at Mobile on Thursday night at 8:05 PM ET.
