Lake County Captains News Release
(Hagerstown, MD)--The Hagerstown Suns scored five first-inning runs Monday night and held on for a 7-5 win over the Lake County Captains at Municipal Stadium.
After the Captains scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, the Suns (24-39) batted around in the bottom of the first inning against Jeff Stevens (7-3). The first seven batters had hits. Jose Castro led off with a double, followed by singles from the next six batters. Jonel Pacheco, Jonathan Sanchez, Levei Ventura and Will Vogl all had RBI. Stevens finally recorded an out when catcher Drew Butera grounded into a double play which also forced in a run to make it 5-2.
The Suns added an unearned run in the second to make it 6-2.
Mike Butia belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning to close the gap to 6-4. Butia has homered in three straight games for the Captains and has four on the season.
The Captains (32-29) failed to score in three innings against Brandon Nall, who entered the game in the fifth in place of start Zac Clements. Nall (5-5) gave up one hit and struck out three.
The Captains pushed another unearned run across in the eighth to make it 6-4, but closer Kevin Tomasiewicz came on to get the final four outs for his 18th save. Tomasiewicz has made 10 appearances against the Captains this year, giving up two runs in 22 2/3 innings with four saves and three wins.
Vogl's solo homer in the eighth off Julio Pinto gave the Suns an insurance run.
Roman Pena lined the first pitch of the game into right field, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He has hit safely in every game he's played since joining the Captains.
The Captains left 11 men on base, and have stranded 25 in the last two games.
In game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05, lefty Dan Cevette will face Suns righty Jeramy Simmons.
