Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - A day after ending their season-high eight game losing streak, the Greenville Drive's woes against the Southern Division champion Augusta GreenJackets continued. The Drive fell to the Jackets 3-1 in the series opener at Lake Olmstead Stadium Monday night. The Drive are now 30-33 in the second half of the regular season.
The Drive, who have now lost six straight versus the GreenJackets, were held in check as they managed just one run and that came in their final at bat. Trailing 3-0, Tony Granadillo led off the inning with a single to right. It was Granadillo's only hit of the game, but it extended his hitting streak to a team-high 15 games. After single by Luis Soto allowed Granadillo to advance to third, Matt Mercurio's ground out knocked in the Drive's only run.
Making his first appearance since being moved to the starting rotation, southpaw Tim Cox suffered the loss despite surrendering one earned run over 5.0 innings. The Jackets struck in the bottom of the first as Antoan Richardson led off with a solo homer to left field.
Augusta would add a second run off Cox in the third, thanks to a Greenville error. With one, shortstop Pedro Vasquez tried to turn a double play, but his throw to first was wide, allowing Richardson to score.
Jason Blackey, who relieved Cox, allowed the GreenJackets final run in the bottom of the seventh. David Maroul led off the inning with a triple and scored as Barry Gunter followed with an RBI-single.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their four-game series Tuesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Lefthander Ryan Phillips will take the mound for Greenville in search of his third win of the season.
The Drive return home on September first to close out the 2006 season with a four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Tickets to can be purchased by calling the Drive Ticket Office at 864-240-4528 or online at www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
