HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (27-25) notched two different two-run victories on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader with the Hickory Crawdads (34-18) at Municipal Stadium. The doubleheader sweep gave Hagerstown a sweep of the rain-shortened two game series, and evened the season series between the two teams at three wins apiece. Hagerstown finished its six-game homestand with a 3-3 record.

In the first game of the doubleheader on Wednesday the Suns pitched their sixth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win. LHP Matt Purke (1-1) got the start and win for Hagerstown, keeping the Crawdads off the board for five innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out one. RHP Drew Van Orden threw the other two innings for the Suns without allowing a hit or a walk to pick up his third save in three tries this season. Starting RHP Luis Ortiz (2-1) suffered the loss for Hickory. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two.

Offensively in the first game of the twin bill the Suns plated one run in the fourth and one in the sixth. In the fourth CF Dale Carey delivered an RBI single on a ground ball to left, driving in DH Osvaldo Abreu from third to make it 1-0. In the sixth 2B Brennan Middleton scored the insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Abreu.

In the second game of the doubleheader Hagerstown plated all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 3-1 victory. The first two hitters of the inning, Carey and LF Jeff Gardner, were both issued walks to begin the frame. Then, DH Grant DeBruin hit a ground ball single to right, driving in Carey from second to tie the game at 1-1. DeBruin and Gardner both advanced a base on a throwing error by Hickory RF Luke Tendler, putting them both in scoring position. Another error, by SS Michael De Leon, allowed Gardner to score and SS David Masters to reach base. Later in the inning, 3B Cody Dent hit a bloop fly ball single to left with the bases loaded, bringing in DeBruin to set the final score.

The one Hickory run in the second game came in the second inning thanks to an RBI groundout by Catcher Kevin Torres. The run came against starting RHP Luis Reyes (2-3), who threw five innings for Hagerstown and gave up two hits and four walks while striking out three to earn the win. In 10 innings worked against Hickory this year, Reyes has given up just one run on five hits. LHP David Napoli worked a hitless seventh for the Suns to record his second save of the season. Starting RHP Cody Buckel (0-1) got tagged with the loss for Hickory. In 3.0 plus innings of work he was charged for allowing two earned runs on one hit and five walks.

The Suns next head to Greensboro, North Carolina to begin a four-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (22-31) starting Thursday June 4. The Grasshoppers will send RHP Drew Steckenrider (1-2) to the mound for his fourth start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
