Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Suns' previously silent bats made noise early against the Huntsville Stars in their 7-1 victory Sunday in front of 4,788 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
After collecting five hits in two games against the Stars, the Suns had four off Huntsville starter and losing pitcher Pedro Liriano (0-2) in the second inning alone. Jacksonville (5-4) scored three times: twice on a two-run double by Mike Collins over a drawn-in outfield and once on pitcher Eric Stults' triple to left center. It was Stults' first professional plate appearance.
Stults (1-0) won in his first start of the season, pitching five innings, scattering three hits and allowing one run. He also singled in his second at-bat and scored a run.
The Suns also benefited by the Stars' five errors. After pitcher Steve Langone doubled in the sixth inning, Dave Detienne hit a comebacker to the pitcher Ryan Miller. Miller elected to throw out Langone at third, but overthrew the ball wildly allowing the run to score.
Langone and Scott Proctor combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief for the Suns, who broke a streak of 19 innings without scoring at the Baseball Grounds.
Derek Michaelis and Stults each had two hits to lead Jacksonville. Corey Hart drove in the lone run for Huntsville (5-5).
The Suns entertain the Tennessee Smokies in a five-game series beginning 7:05 p.m. Monday at the Baseball Grounds. Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (2-0, 0.00) has not allowed a run over 11 innings in two starts. He will oppose Smokies lefty Juan Pena (0-1, 6.00).
