Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons put up a valiant effort by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth but fell a run short as the Barons lost to the Carolina Mudcats by the score of 7-6 in front of 5,535 fans at the Hoover Met on Saturday evening.

Carolina used six pitchers on the night, walked 11 Barons and gave up 11 hits but was able to hold onto the victory in the end. In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Hankins, Gabe Alvarez, and Scott Bikowski all walked to start the inning before Carlos Maldonaldo stroked a single to score Hankins and Jonathan Aceves knocked in two runs with a check swing double down the right field line. With one out and the tying run only 90 feet away, Chad Durham failed to get the bunt down on a squeeze play that erased Maldonaldo and then struck out to end the game.

Birmingham took an early 2-0 lead in the second on a RBI single by Guillermo Reyes and a steal of home by Eric Battersby but was unable to hold the lead as Barons starter Dennis Ulacia gave up three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth. Ulacia (0-2) took the loss after throwing five innings and giving up four runs.

After the Barons pulled within a run in the bottom of the fifth with a Battersby RBI single to make the score 4-3, the Mudcats put up three runs off of reliever Jake Meyer to seemingly put the game away before the late Barons rally fell short.

Carolina reliever, Sean Fesh (4-0) picked up his Southern League leading fourth victory after throwing 2.1 innings of relief and Franklyn Gracesqui picked up his first save after stopping the Barons in the ninth.

The three-game series concludes tomorrow afternoon as Barons LHP Jim Bullard (0-0, 4.91) takes on LHP Dontrelle Willis (0-0, 1.50) in a 2:00 matinee.
