ORLANDO âTennessee brought their bats with them on Sunday, pounding out 17 hits as the Smokies dropped the Orlando Rays 9-1 in front of 2,860 fans at Cracker Jack Stadium.
The Smokies grabbed a 5-0 lead by the end of the first, and the hit parade was on. Bucky Jacobsen led the Smokies attack with four hits, including a home run and two RBI. The Smokies chased O-Rays' starter Jim Magrane (2-1) after 4.1 innings after he allowed six runs (all earned) on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
Jeremy Cummings (1-1) was credited with the win, as he allowed one earned run and scattered six hits over 5.1 innings.
Jonny Gomes went 1-2 with an RBI while Matt Diaz went 2-4 with a double to pace the Rays offensively. The Rays' best chance to break the game open came in the eighth inning as the Rays loaded the bases with one out only to strand all three runners.
The Rays return to action Monday night at 7:05 as the team takes on the Huntsville Stars at Cracker Jack Stadium in the Disney Wide World of Sports® complex. Monday's game is the first game of a four-game series with the Stars before the team hits the road for a 12-game road trip.
