Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL â The Mobile BayBears entered Sunday night's game in a five-game losing skid, a streak in which the offense has done little to back up their outstanding starting pitching (1.08 in those five games). The streak came to an end Sunday as the BayBears' bats came alive in the second inning, scoring four times to take a 5-2 lead, which they would not relinquish. Mobile took the final game of their three-game series with the Greenville Braves, 5-4.
Mobile started the scoring in the first inning off of starter Brett Evert (1-1) as Alex Fernandez drove in Rico Washington from third with his infield single. The G-Braves answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second as Evert drove in both with a bases loaded single.
The BayBears jumped all over Evert in the bottom of the second. With one out, Jake Gautreau and Ben Johnson hit back-to-back homers to get things started. Humberto Quintero then doubled, and following a walk to Vince Faison, Rico Washington tripled off of the right field wall chasing both runners across the plate.
The five runs held up as BayBears starter, Roger Deago (1-0) allowed three runs in his five and one-thirds innings to earn his first professional win. Rusty Tucker threw two scoreless innings to pick up his first Double-A save.
The win was the BayBears this season in one-run decisions (1-5).
The BayBears now travel to Birmingham to begin a four-game series with the Barons. RHP Steve Watkins (0-1; 4.00) will start on the mound for Mobile against Birmingham's LHP Corwin Malone (1-0; 2.70).
