Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Hagerstown scored six straight runs, including one in the eighth and two unearned tallies in the ninth, to overcome a 6-2 deficit and defeat Delmarva for the second straight night to open the season. A bases loaded single by Bill Rhinehart with two down in the top of the ninth brought home Sean Rooney and Daniel Lyons to give the Suns an 8-6 advantage which they would not relinquish.

Hagerstown starting pitcher Colten Willems went 5 innings, allowed 6 runs(4 earned), and was on the hook for the loss until the Suns offense awakened with three runs in the sixth inning, including a towering two-run homer by Stephen King which brought Hagerstown within a run. A Jake Smolinski long ball to lead off the eighth tied the game at six, and the Shorebirds defense failed them again late when Ryan Adams let a grounder to second base scoot under his glove and into right field. What should have been the third out of the ninth inning mushroomed into the winning runs for Hagerstown.

Where was the Delmarva offense after the third inning? That's an excellent question, as the ‘Birds recorded just 1 hit after the third, a Tyler Henson leadoff single in the fifth. Terrence Engles earned the win, retiring nine straight Shorebirds in his three innings out of the Hagerstown bullpen, and Clint Everts earned the save with a perfect ninth. All together, Hagerstown pitching retired the final 15 Shorebirds.

Delmarva scored four in the third to open up a 6-2 lead, headlined by Ryan Adams' first homer of the season, but the Suns bullpen stymied the Shorebirds the rest of the way.
