Jackets Turn Triple Play in Loss

Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets dropped their second straight game to open the 2008 season with a 3-2 loss to the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Augusta turned three double plays and one triple play but Greensboro rallied for the second night in a row plating three unanswered runs off the Augusta bullpen. Dan Runzler suffered the loss in relief while Charlie Culberson and James Simmons each drove in a run for Augusta.

With the score tied at 2-2 the Grasshoppers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch from Runzler. Runzler (0-1) was able to get the first two batters of the inning but then allowed a base hit, threw a wild pitch, intentionally walked a batter, allowed an infield single and then threw another wild pitch allowing Ryan Anetsberger to score the go-ahead run.

Greensboro plated two runs in the seventh inning off of Joe Paterson to tie the game at 2-2. Hunter Mense and Bryan Petersen led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Anetsberger then hit a sharp ground ball to Charlie Culberson and the shortstop had the ball roll up his arm and into centerfield allowing the first run to score. Michael Stanton followed with an RBI sac-fly to right plating Peterson for the second run of the inning.

Paterson suffered the blown save working two innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits. The lefty also walked one and struck out one.

The GreenJackets took the first lead of the game in the fifth inning plating two runs for a 2-0 lead. Jackson Williams scored the first run on an RBI sac-fly from Simmons. Culberson followed with an RBI double scoring Francisco Peguero.

Augusta starter Oliver Odle worked six shutout innings allowing six hits, no walks and struck out three for the no-decision.

Grasshoppes reliever Brad Stone (1-0) recorded the win in relief with two perfect innings pitched striking out two.

The GreenJackets and Grasshoppers continue their series on Saturday night with Augusta sending the Giants top pick in the 2007 draft to the mound, lefty Madison Bumgarner. The Grasshoppers will counter with left-hander Jay Voss. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

Augusta turned a triple play in the third inning. With runners on the corners Emilo Ontiveros lined out Thomas Neal at first base. Neal then dove on the first base bag to force out Jameson Smith for the second out. Adam Howard broke from home on the line drive and Neal then got up and raced across the diamond flipping to third baseman Andrew Davis to complete the triple play.
