Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- A testament to the continued success of their annual Pitching Pink fundraising campaign, the Hagerstown Suns presented a donation of $5,372 to Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley earlier this week, using proceeds raised at the ballpark to support the fight against breast cancer.
"It was great to see the community get behind our Pitching Pink campaign," Suns President and General Manager Bob Flannery said. "As an organization, the Hagerstown Suns are proud to be involved with such a worthy cause."
The Suns made their donation official at a check presentation ceremony on Wednesday, with Executive Director Joan Fell (pictured above, at right) accepting on behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley, along with Mindy Marsden, the president of the organization's board of directors.
The Suns' Pitching Pink campaign ran throughout the first half of their 2009 season, culminating with a tremendously successful Pitching Pink Night on Saturday, June 6.
Over the first two months of the season, pink Breast Cancer Awareness ribbons were available at the Suns' ticket office and merchandise store, presented to anyone making a $1.00 donation to Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley.
On June 6, the Suns staged Pitching Pink Night at Municipal Stadium, sponsored by Lehigh Phoenix and Associated Radiologists. During that night's game, Hagerstown players wore limited-edition pink jerseys in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, and fans participated in a "Shirt off Our Backs" auction, bidding to bring the pink jersey of their favorite Suns player home with them. After the game, auction winners were able to head onto the Municipal Stadium field, where Suns players took the pink jerseys off their backs, autographed them, and personally presented them to their new owners. Proceeds from the event went to Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley.
Breast Cancer Awareness-Cumberland Valley is a non-profit organization based in Hagerstown that provides information and support for those affected by breast cancer. The organization's mission is "to ensure, through the power of communication, that no one face breast cancer alone."
