Wild Pitch the Difference in Penultimate Road Game
September 3, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
In a game of several missed opportunities and momentum shifts, the Augusta GreenJackets took advantage of the biggest of them all in the seventh inning. Juan Perez scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Jackets the only run they'd need in a 1-0 win over the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium.
Perez began the inning with a roller that caromed off Samuel Sime's glove at third base and trickled into shallow left field. The GreenJacket left fielder hustled to get to second on the error and stole third base before scoring the game's lone run on a wild pitch.
Augusta ran out of two promising innings early in the game on strikeout-caught stealing double plays. Mike Minor - in his fourth professional start - didn't give them many opportunities other than that, firing five scoreless innings of five-hit baseball without a walk, striking out a career-high nine.
Aaron King was up to the challenges thrown at him by the Braves all night long, holding Rome scoreless on three hits through six innings. He struggled with wildness at times, walking two and hitting two batters, but King (7-6) struck out six. His performance against major league rehabber Nate McLouth was equally impressive, holding the Gold Glove outfielder to an 0-2 night as one of those two hit batsmen.
With a chance to tie the game in the seventh off Eric Stolp, Rome's Kuyaunnis Miles singled with Samuel Sime at third. Juan Perez's throw home was in time to nail Sime for the third out of the inning to keep the slim Augusta lead. The Miles single was the last Braves hit of the contest.
Michael Mehlich (1-2) took the loss for Rome with a three-inning stint in a game that saw Braves hitters go without scoring a run now for 42 consecutive innings.
The GreenJackets will play their final road contest of the year against Rome on Friday night, with Orlando Yntema (0-2, 7.36) taking the hill against JJ Hoover (7-6, 3.23). After that, both teams will spend the holiday weekend at Lake Olmstead Stadium as the GreenJackets continue their series against the Braves beginning on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
First pitch on Friday from State Mutual Stadium comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. You may purchase seats to any of the remaining 2009 home contests by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
