Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- The Hagerstown Suns (23-40) needed two pitchers to get through the first three innings of Thursday night's game, quickly falling behind 7-0 to the Lake County Captains (38-28) in an eventual 9-2 loss at Municipal Stadium.
The Captains jumped on Hagerstown starter Paul Demny (3-11) for four runs in the top of the second inning, keyed by a two-run double by Dan DeGeorge. Demny was replaced by reliever Austin Garrett in the third, but Lake County kept pouring on against the left-hander, with DeGeorge singling in two more runs to cap a three-run inning.
The Suns, meanwhile, managed one lone run against Captains' starter Danny Salazar -- on a fifth-inning RBI single by first baseman Tyler Moore. Lake County reliever Nickolas Sarianides (1-0) earned the win with three innings of one-run ball, allowing nothing more than a Moore sacrifice fly to score centerfielder J.R. Higley in the seventh.
Although the Suns drew seven walks, they managed only five hits, and went one-for-eight with runners in scoring position. Second baseman Steve Lombardozzi reached base in four of his five at bats, walking twice and picking up two singles.
The highlight of the evening for Hagerstown came over the final two innings of the game, as erstwhile outfielder Valerio Heredia made the first relief appearance of his professional career, shutting out the Captains over the eighth and ninth innings. After walking the first batter he faced leading off the eighth, Heredia retired the final six Lake County batters in order, receiving a congratulatory handshake from home plate umpire Jason Hutchings as he walked off the field after his final inning of work.
The Suns and Captains will play the second game of their five-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m., with Friday Night Fireworks following the game, presented by COOL 95.9fm.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
