PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns lost their third straight game following their 11-game winning streak, dropping game two of their five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Thursday by a final score of 6-4.
Suns starter Adam Conley (11-5) allowed all six Blue Wahoos runs in the bottom of the second inning, and Jacksonville's four-run third was not enough to combat the early deficit. Conley's rough start also snapped a streak of 29 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Hits by Ryan LaMarre and Devin Lohman plated the first two runs for Pensacola in its big inning, but it was Mike Costanzo's three-run double that built a 5-0 lead and proved to be the difference in the game.
Yorman Rodriguez's RBI single capped the inning for Pensacola, handing Daniel Renken (6-8) a 6-0 lead before he took the mound for his third inning of work. Conley, meanwhile, lasted five innings and gave up 11 hits while striking out five in taking his fifth loss of the year.
The Suns rallied in the top of the third, beginning with Chris Gutierrez's RBI single to put Jacksonville on the board. Two batters later, Zack Cox slammed a three-run homer, his third of the season, to pull the Suns to within two runs.
It would be as close as the Suns would get, however, as Renken settled down and the Blue Wahoos bullpen stemmed several Jacksonville rallies late in the game. Both Gutierrez and Cox finished with a pair of hits, but the Suns' efforts fell short.
Trevor Bell earned his second save in as many nights and his 13th overall, striking out the side in the top half of the ninth inning.
Jacksonville will try to avoid a series loss in game three of the series on Friday behind right-hander Bryan Evans (4-3, 3.88). The Blue Wahoos will counter with right-hander Tim Crabbe (5-8, 3.43), with first pitch scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
Suns fans can listen to Friday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:45 p.m. ET with the UF Health Suns Pre-Game Show.
