Montgomery Biscuits News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Biscuits (59-57, 22-24) led 5-2 in the fifth inning but could not recover after allowing the Tennessee Smokies (60-54, 26-19) to score four runs in the seventh inning in a 9-8 loss to snap Montgomery's five-game win streak at Smokies Park on Thursday night.
The Biscuits were leading 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Matt Szczur singled to leadoff the inning, Jimmy Patterson (0-3) retired the next two batters before Justin Bour doubled in a run to make it 6-5. Rubi Silva followed with a double to center to tie the game. Later in the inning, John Andreoli came through with a two-run single to give the Smokies a 6-4 lead - their first lead since the first inning.
The Smokies led 9-6 to start the ninth inning. Frank Bautista (15) walked the first two batters. A two-base wild pitch allowed one run to score. Mahtook then drove in the second run in the ninth with an infield single to make it 9-8. Bautista then got a line drive-double play and a strike out to end the game.
The Biscuits trailed 2-0 after the first inning. In the third, Ryan Brett started the frame with his first Double-A home run. Mikie Mahtook followed with a two-run shot then a solo homer from Kyeong Kang made it 4-2 Biscuits.
Mahtook finished the game with four hits and four RBI, both season-highs. Shawn O'Malley and Brett both finished with multiple hits.
Game two in the series is Friday night at 6:15. RHP Michael Colla will get the ball for the Biscuits while the Smokies will send RHP Dae-Eun Rhee to the hill.
